Industry based learning (Student Perspective)

Industry-based Learning (IBL) commenced at Swinburne University of Technology in 1963 in the Engineering Faculty and as such is the longest running Industry-based learning program in Australia. Each year Swinburne University of Technology places about 500 students from over 30 degree programs into Industry-Based Learning placements with in excess of 350 businesses participating.

Congratulations to the 27 Swinburne students awarded 2013 Vice-Chancellor’s scholarships for academic excellence!

Elly Kennedy (pictured), a Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship recipient and Bachelor of Design (Communication Design)/Bachelor of Business student, writes about why she chose Swinburne.

I chose Swinburne as my first, second and third preference for many reasons. As I am passionate about creativity and design I was aware that Swinburne hosted a vibrant and popular faculty of arts and I was immediately drawn to this aspect. The university offered several design courses and promised a high standard of industry-based teaching and learning, which was both exciting and assuring.

Public transport came into the picture as I lived right near a train station. The fact that Swinburne campuses (both Prahran and Hawthorn) are just a short train trip away immediately drew me to this university as I was leading a busy life and ease of access was really important.

Swinburne appealed to me, not only on an academic level but also in terms of lifestyle and enjoyment. Hawthorn and Prahran campuses are located on Glenferrie Road and Chapel Street respectively. These great locations meant opportunities to catch up with uni friends, work on briefs in local cafés and wander the streets in breaks. This was another feature that got my attention.

Unlike many other universities isolated within the community, Swinburne brings learning and living together to motivate its students and allow them to work with the wider community.

I cannot forget one of the most important reasons why Swinburne became my number one choice. After receiving a high ATAR score I knew I was possibly eligible for a scholarship at many universities. However, the Vice-Chancellors scholarship for design was the one for me. Offering fully paid tuition in recognition for my hard work was the icing on the cake. I am very grateful Swinburne has offered me the chance to study and learn without the financial stress.

Overall the chance to study a creative four-year university course, combined with the assurance I was learning from the best in the field, consolidated my initial impression of Swinburne as a unique and motivating place to learn and socialise.

Hacking into the future

Good luck to Swinburne teams competing in Cyber Security Challenge Australia (CySCA) 2013!

Students from universities across Australia will compete in the CySCA online hacking competition, starting tomorrow, May 7, at 12noon. Last year, Swinburne beat all the other Victorian teams to place seventh in this national competition.

Three Swinburne teams will take part in CySCA this year. Each team has four ICT students, both undergraduates and TAFE students. Swinburne teams will be competing at Hawthorn campus:

Team A:EN411d

Team B:ATC009

Team C: EN209

Teams will connect to their own personal Telstra server and a VPN, and have 24-hours to break into one of the virtualised Telstra servers and solve assigned problems.

This annual competition is sponsored by the Office of the Prime Minister, the Department of Defence, Defence Signals Directorate and Telstra.
